I can remember when I taught the history of high school. I always started the day with what I called my «decisive moment.» It would be shown on the PowerPoint screen and the students would enter class and immediately start working on it while taking care, I took documents and answered some questions. This «defining moment» could have been an appointment in which I wanted them to reflect, a great idea to consider, some important vocabulary words for today’s lesson or a warning to write. Whatever it is, it was important for the success of the lesson.
I get this idea of a time in my junior history class. We were talking about World War I and the different types of governments that were present for the countries involved. Our teacher talked about how good it was that we had a democracy. Now I had heard that word numerous times, but I was so passionate that I had to ask the question: «What is a democracy?» This was not necessarily part of its content to cover that day, but took the opportunity. He began to tell our class about all the blessings we have of a democracy. He was very intentional and attentive with his words. At the end of the class, 90% of the students cried, our teacher cried, and we all left that day with more appreciation for our country. He took the opportunity presented to him and turned her into a «decisive moment.»
These moments are often presented in our spiritual lives as well. God will create a situation in which we have a «defining moment» present and depends on us to decide whether we will take the opportunity presented to us. In facts, Peter had a similar situation and did not miss the time. Peter and John had gone to the temple, where they saw a man lame from the birth he was being carried. Every day they would take him to beg the people who visited the temple. The man saw Peter and John and asked him for some money.
«Peter and John looked at him carefully, and Peter said:» Look at us! «The lame man looked anxiously for money. Then Peter took the man lame by his right hand and helped him get up. Amazed!
The man who had sat in the temple every day Mendigaba had been cured. Peter realized the reactions of those around him and saw his opportunity to share the gospel. The rest of the chapter gives the presentation of the Gospel of Peter to those who attend. He knew that he had a «decisive moment» by hand and that people were open to listen to the truth and, therefore, shared.
God presents opportunities like this, it is our work to take advantage of the opportunity and not let them pass. Are we aware of the people around us and listen to those «defining moments» in which we have the opportunity to share the Gospel? When those opportunities arise, do we take advantage or continue with our plan for the day? There are times when people are more sensitive to the things of God and we should not lose those moments. Take advantage of a decisive moment today!
